Amazon owned IMDB.com, a popular web database of movies and actors, is no longer accessible from China.

Why China Blocked IMDB

While there has been no official comment on why the IMDB site was blocked inside China, rumors on Twitter suggest that this documentary on the Dalai Lama and Tibet may have been the main reason for the block.

The film talks about Tibetans living in exile and their struggle to free Tibet. The film also contains scenes from Chinese occupied Lhasa (Tibet capital) and all this may have been enough for the censors in China to put IMDB behind the red firewall.

Other popular websites that are currently blocked in China include Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Tumblr and Twitter. Wikipedia is only partially banned in China.

This article describes how you can secure your Wireless Network from hackers and youll also learn about free tools that people generally use to intercept your Wi-Fi signals.

Wireless Networking (Wi-Fi) has made it so easy for you to use the computer, portable media player, mobile phones, video game consoles, and other wireless devices anywhere in the house without the clutter of cables.

With traditional wired networks, it is extremely difficult for someone to steal your bandwidth but the big problem with wireless signals is that others can access the Internet using your broadband connection even while they are in a neighboring building or sitting in a car that parked outside your apartment.

This practice, also known as piggybacking, is bad for three reasons:

    * It will increase your monthly Internet bill especially when you have to pay per byte of data transfer.
* It will decrease your Internet access speed since you are now sharing the same internet connection with other users.
* It can create a security hazard* as others may hack your computers and access your personal files through your own wireless network.

*] What do the bad guys use – There have been quite a few instances where innocent Internet users have been arrested for sending hate emails when in reality, their email accounts where hacked though the unsecured Wi-Fi networks that they had at home. Wireshark is a free packet sniffing tool for Linux, Mac and Windows that can scan traffic flowing though a wireless network including cookies, forms and other HTTP requests.

How to Secure Your Wireless Network

The good news is that it is not very hard to make your wireless network secure, which will both prevent others from stealing your internet and will also prevent hackers from taking control of your computers through your own wireless network.

Here a few simple things that you should to secure your wireless network:
Step 1. Open your router settings page

First, you need to know how to access your wireless router settings. Usually you can do this by typing in 192.168.1.1 into your web browser, and then enter the correct user name and password for the router. This is different for each router, so first check your router user manual.

You can also use Google to find the manuals for most routers online in case you lost the printed manual that came with your router purchase. For your reference, here are direct links to the manufacturer site of some popular router brands – Linksys, Cisco, Netgear, Apple AirPort, SMC, D-Link, Buffalo, TP-LINK, 3Com, Belkin

Step 2. Create a unique password on your router

Once you have logged into your router, the first thing you should do to secure your network is to change the default password* of the router to something more secure.

This will prevent others from accessing the router and you can easily maintain the security settings that you want. You can change the password from the Administration settings on your router settings page. The default values are generally admin / password.

[*] What do the bad guys use – This is a public database of default usernames and passwords of wireless routers, modems, switches and other networking equipment. For instance, anyone can easily make out from the database that the factory-default settings for Linksys equipment can be accessed by using admin for both username and password fields.

Step 3. Change your Network SSID name

The SSID (or Wireless Network Name) of your Wireless Router is usually pre-defined as “default” or is set as the brand name of the router (e.g., linksys). Although this will not make your network inherently* more secure, changing the SSID name of your network is a good idea as it will make it more obvious for others to know which network they are connecting to.

This setting is usually under the basic wireless settings in your router settings page. Once this is set, you will always be sure that you are connecting to the correct Wireless network even if there are multiple wireless networks in your area. Dont use your name, home address or other personal information in the SSID name.

[*] What do the bad guys use – Wi-Fi scanning tools like inSSIDer (Windows) and Kismet (Mac, Linux) are free and they will allow anyone to find all the available Wireless Networks in an area even if the routers are not broadcasting their SSID name.

Step 4. Enable Network Encryption

In order to prevent other computers in the area from using your internet connection, you need to encrypt your wireless signals.

There are several encryption methods for wireless settings, including WEP, WPA (WPA-Personal), and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access version 2). WEP is basic encryption and therefore least secure (i.e., it can be easily cracked*, but is compatible with a wide range of devices including older hardware, whereas WPA2 is the most secure but is only compatible with hardware manufactured since 2006.

To enable encryption on your Wireless network, open the wireless security settings on your router configuration page. This will usually let you select which security method you wish to choose; if you have older devices, choose WEP, otherwise go with WPA2. Enter a passphrase to access the network; make sure to set this to something that would be difficult for others to guess, and consider using a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters in the passphrase.

[*] What do the bad guys use – AirCrack and coWPAtty are some free tools that allow even non-hackers to crack the WEP / WPA (PSK) keys using dictionary or brute force techniques. A video on YouTube suggests that AirCrack may be easily used to break WiFi encryption using a jail-broken iPhone or an iPod Touch.

Step 5. Filter MAC addresses

Whether you have a laptop or a Wi-Fi enabled mobile phone, all your wireless devices have a unique MAC address (this has nothing to do with an Apple Mac) just like every computer connected to the Internet has a unique IP address. For an added layer of protection, you can add the MAC addresses of all your devices to your wireless router settings so that only the specified devices can connect to your Wi-Fi network.

MAC addresses are hard-coded into your networking equipment, so one address will only let that one device on the network. It is, unfortunately, possible to spoof a MAC address*, but an attacker must first know one of the MAC addresses of the computers that are connected to your Wireless network before he can attempt spoofing.

To enable MAC address filtering, first make a list of all your hardware devices that you want to connect to your wireless network**. Find their MAC addresses, and then add them to the MAC address filtering in your router administrative settings. You can find the MAC address for your computers by opening Command Prompt and typing in ipconfig /all, which will show your MAC address beside the name Physical Address. You can find the MAC addresses of Wireless mobile phones and other portable devices under their network settings, though this will vary for each device.

[*] What do the bad guys use – Someone can change the MAC address of his or her own computer and can easily connect to your network since your network allows connection from devices that have that particular MAC address. Anyone can determine the MAC address of your device wireless using a sniffing tool like Nmap and he can then change the MAC address of his own computer using another free tool like MAC Shift.

Step 6. Reduce the Range of the Wireless Signal

If your wireless router has a high range but you are staying in a small studio apartment, you can consider decreasing the signal range by either changing the mode of your router to 802.11g (instead of 802.11n or 802.11b) or use a different wireless channel.

You can also try placing the router under the bed, inside a shoe box or wrap a foil around the router antennas so that you can somewhat restrict the direction of signals.

Apply the Anti-Wi-Fi Paint – Researchers have developed a special Wi-Fi blocking paint that can help you stop neighbors from accessing your home network without you having to set up encryption at the router level. The paint contains chemicals that blocks radio signals by absorbing them. “By coating an entire room, Wi-Fi signals cant get in and, crucially, cant get out.”

Step 7. Upgrade your Router firmware

You should check the manufacturer site occasionally to make sure that your router is running the latest firmware. You can find the existing firmware version of your router using from the router dashboard at 192.168.*.
Connect to your Secure Wireless Network

To conclude, MAC Address filtering with WPA2 (AES) encryption (and a really complex passphrase) is probably the best way to secure your wireless network.

Once you have enabled the various security settings in your wireless router, you need to add the new settings to your computers and other wireless devices so that they all can connect to the Wi-Fi network. You can select to have your computer automatically connect to this network, so you wont have to enter the SSID, passphrase and other information every time you connect to the Internet.

Your wireless network will now be a lot more secure and intruders may have a tough time intercepting your Wi-Fi signals.

Who is Connected to your Wireless Network

If you are worried that an outsider may be connecting to the Internet using your Wireless network, try AirSnare – it a free utility that will look for unexpected MAC addresses on your Wireless network as well as to DHCP requests. Another option is that you open your router administration page (using the 192.168.* address) and look for the DHCP Clients Table (it under Status > Local Network on Linksys routers). Here you will see a list of all computers and wireless devices that are connected to your home network.

*It is also a good idea to turn off the router completely when you are not planning to use the computer for a longer period (like when you are out shopping). You save on electricity and the door remains 100% shut for wireless piggybackers.

**If you ever want to let a new device connect to your network, you will have to find its MAC address and add it to your router. If you simple want to let a friend connect to your wireless network one time, you can remove his MAC address from the router settings when he or she leaves your place.

Mininova was still the largest torrent site on the Internet, but this quickly changed after the site founders removed of millions of torrents to avoid having to pay millions of dollars in fines. In the days that followed, traffic to the site dropped 66%, while the number of daily downloads are less than 4% of what they used to be.

After nearly five years of loyal service, Mininova deleted over a million torrent files when it partly shut down its website a week ago. What remains are a few thousand torrents that were uploaded though its content distribution platform, which only lists uploads by approved users.

Mininova was forced to take such a drastic measure following a negative verdict in their court battle with the local anti-piracy outfit BREIN this summer. The torrent indexer was told by the court to remove all infringing torrent files from its index. This was technically unfeasible according to the Mininova team, who were left with no other choice than to remove all torrent files uploaded by regular users.

This move resulted in the deletion of more than a million torrents, many of which were not infringing any copyrights at all. As expected, the consequences of this decision for Mininova traffic, as well as the number of searches and downloads on the site, are disastrous.

In just a few days Mininova traffic plummeted by 66%, from well over 5 million visits the day before the torrents were removed, to just 1.8 million yesterday. If the downward trend continues at this rate, the site will have less than a million visits a day a week from now, throwing it out of the top 10 most visited torrent sites that it led for two years in a row.

Even more striking perhaps is the drop in downloads and searches. As can be seen from the graph below, the number of downloads dropped from over 10 million a day to just 371,424. The number of searches went down from 10 to 3 million, a less steep drop than the downloads, probably indicating that not everyone is aware of the reduced number of torrents on the site.

So what next?

There is no doubt that Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN will be proud of their accomplishment, but aside from ruining Mininova business it will not have a significant impact on the overall volume of BitTorrent traffic. As always, new sites emerge by the dozens as old ones are shut down and users quickly adapt to the new situation.

A network engineer at a major Aussie ISP has confirmed that Mininova partial shutdown has had no noticeable effect on traffic volumes. I didnt notice any reduction in [torrent] traffic when The Pirate Bay went down. It hard to see how thered be any significant change from Mininova withdrawal.

That said, the ‘end of Mininova does leave a scar behind. For years most torrent indexers heavily relied on torrents that were uploaded to Mininova. With over a million user-uploaded torrents, the site was without a doubt the main torrent provider on the Internet. Although most of the torrents are still mirrored on other sites, Mininova role as content provider has to be taken over by others.

(PhysOrg.com) — Google has introduced its new experimental programming language Go, which aims to combine speedy application development through simplified coding with high-speed program execution.

Go is designed to serve as a systems language, rather like C or C++, but is extremely fast for development like Python, while still providing the benefits and security of being a true compiled language. The programming software is being released in an open source version because it is now at the stage of being powerful and useful, and because the open-source community is a great resource for developing better tools and libraries.

A principal engineer at Google, Rob Pike, said the new language made him more productive than ever. Go code is compiled almost instantly, and when compiled the code runs at close to the same speed as C, Pike explained. Unlike existing languages, Go is designed as a language for the kind of programs Google programmers write, and is optimized for massive scaling and for multi-core processors that handle many tasks in parallel. So far it has not been used in any of Google’s publically available applications.

Google’s Go began as a group 20% project in 2007, and full-time work began on it last year. In group 20% projects Google employees can spend up to 20% of their time developing projects that lie outside their normal responsibilities. Pike and colleagues developed Go because they were frustrated with the modern complexity of software development. Go is not designed for beginners, but is probably around the same level as Java in terms of difficulty learning it, Pike said. It is an object-oriented language with features such as true closures and reflection.

Go works with Google’s open-source technology Native Client, designed for running native code in web-based applications, but it is not known yet whether Go will be used in the new Google operating system, Chrome.

Google released another programming language, Simple, in July this year. Simple was a BASIC dialect designed specifically for developing Android applications.

What’s new in HTML5 and what happened to XHTML2

Is XHTML dead? In July, the XHTML2 working group announced it would be dropping the spec and closing the book on XHTML2. That’s XHTML with a 2. Not XHTML.

XHTML is alive and well – it’s just not getting the overhaul that was intended with XHTML2. If you’re a developer or designer who writes markup, then you’re possibly already using XHTML 1.0 or 1.1, strict, transitional or otherwise.

I’d also be willing to bet that if you’re using it, you’re using it to make use of stricter validation rules: lowercase tags, double quoted attributes, self-closing tags (like
) and so on – right?

Equally, if you’re that type of designer or developer, you’re probably also not serving it as true XHTML. Quite simply because Internet Explorer doesn’t accept the application/ xhtml+xml mime type at all, which is a requirement for XHTML. This is old news, though.

The new news is that XHTML2 is dead. The idealist recommendation for the web didn’t make it. Possibly because of the lack of backward compatibility, possibly for lots of reasons – the web was hot with discussion on the loss of the spec; the why, who and “whoh!”.

However, there is hope. If you’re the type of person who likes the strict rules of markup design that runs everything carefully through a validator then you’ll be over the moon to know two things:

Firstly, HTML5 supports all the lowercase, self-closing tags, double quoted attributes – the works. And if you don’t like these things, it supports that too!

Secondly, if you absolutely have to have XHTML in your bag of tricks, XHTML5 will satisfy your thirst. XHTML5 is quite simply HTML5 + XML, ie all the normal rules of XHTML, like no document. write allowed.

    * Google plumps for HTML 5 over Gears successor

For it to be XHTML5, though, you must serve it as application/xml or application/ xhtml+xml (which isn’t currently supported in IE). So HTML5 with lovely XHTML-style markup is the way I’ll be going.

Before we dive into what’s in HTML5 and what we have to do to get it going, though, I want to address the future: 2022. Aside from it being the year Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee (assuming she’s still around), it’s the date that’s been inappropriately linked with HTML5 in the minds of many in our community. It’s wrong.

In fact, HTML5 is ready to use today. So why the confusion? In an interview by Tech Republic, Ian Hickson, the editor of the HTML5 working draft, was asked to give a timeline of the HTML5 recommendation.

One date should have come out of that interview, but another, much further away did instead: 2022 – the date of the final proposed recommendation, which actually translates to: require at least two browsers to completely pass HTML5 test suites.

Let’s put this in context of another spec that’s taken a very long time: CSS2.1. CSS2.1 is CSS that I’m certain you’re familiar with. I’m certain you use it day to day, without any thought as to whether it’s a completed spec. Well, it’s been in development for over 10 years, and it has only just become a candidate recommendation (23 April 2009).

Even then, it still doesn’t have two browsers completely supporting it. Only Internet Explorer 8 supports the full CSS2.1 spec. Did that stop you from using CSS2.1? I suspect not. Will that stop us from using HTML5? It certainly shouldn’t.

HTML5 is available and ready to use today. In fact, the really important HTML5 date is October 2009. This is the last call for the HTML5 working draft. That means that issues with the spec, enhancements, bugs, anything – it all needs to be in and submitted and written into the spec for October (although it can go through reiterations, this is the main deadline).

The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) is completely open for anyone to contribute their ideas and suggestions.

At the site, you can sign up to the mailing lists. You can communicate directly using IRC. And there’s even a complete log of all the IRC history. It’s all available from whatwg.org.

HTML5 in five seconds

So how do you get your markup to validate as HTML5? It’s super easy: you change your DOCTYPE from whatever it is now to this:

That’s it. It doesn’t require anything more than that.

Google is doing it already. Check out its homepage, written all in one line:

HTML5 – Google Search</ title>

Ironically, Google's search page and listings don't validate because of their use of invalid tags – font element for instance – and a number of other errors. But that doesn't matter, because they can take advantage of the HTML5 parsing rules with that doctype (for example: no type attribute on the script element).

Although that's all you need for HTML5 to be triggered, there's a lot more to HTML5 for you to play with. If you want something a little fuller, here's a typical boilerplate for HTML5, which includes the IE shiv (which I'll discuss later) and default HTML5 block styles:

Hello World

A note about the style and script elements in HTML5: these both no longer need the type attribute as they default to text/css and text/ javascript respectively, which just helps to remove a little more cruft from our markup

The new HTML5 elements

More markup

Way back when we were laying pages out using the table element, we probably weren't aware of semantics and standards. Nowadays, we're using divs left right and centre.

The situation isn't terrible, because most of us are using semantic classes and ID naming conventions to describe what the function of the div is. Wouldn't it just be better if we had a header and footer element instead? HTML5 gives us exactly that.

One of the biggest assets to us authors of HTML5 is the new semantic markup. There's an arsenal of new elements that has been added to HTML5, and because of the 'pave the cowpaths' approach, these can be used by the browsers today (although some might need a little bit of prodding from JavaScript).

Here's a non-exclusive list of the new HTML5 elements that are available:

1) Block structure

article represents a component of a page that consists of a self-contained composition in a document, page, application, or site and that is intended to be independently distributable or reusable.

This could be a forum post, blog post, newspaper article, a user comment, or any other independent item of content.

aside is used to represent a section of content that is related to the content around the aside element, eg a pull quote or a sidebar.

footer is the footer to a section. This is not restricted to one use at the bottom of the page. You can also use the footer to mark up the footer of a blog post in addition to the footer of the entire document.

header represents a group of navigational aids, and is used to construct the document outline. You are also not restricted to using header only once; you could use this to mark up the author's name and the time of a comment placed on a blog post, for example.

nav is used to wrap major navigation blocks, such as table of contents, pagination links and breadcrumbs. Note that the nav element should be used for links that navigate around site, ie inappropriate for a list of sponsor links.

section is a generic document or application section. However, this isn't a replacement for the div element. A section is only appropriate if the element's contents would be listed explicitly in the document's outline.

2) Inline semantics

details is used to include additional info that the user can obtain on demand. An open attribute on the element determines whether its contents can be seen, and it can be toggled by the user or by JavaScript.

figure is used to annotate illustrations, photos, listings etc that, if moved away from the primary content, would not affect the flow of the document.

mark highlights a run of text, eg to mark the terms the user was searching for.

time is intended to encode modern dates and times in a machine-readable way. The datetime attribute on this element gives the machine readable time, whereas the contents is human readable.

3) Interactive elements

The following elements include DOM interface methods that allow them to function correctly. So if the browser hasn't implemented these elements specifically, they won't work. However, they all support fallbacks using nested elements within the tag to degrade down to a working solution.

audio and video are both types of media elements. They enable you to embed audio and video directly into the browser without any need for plug-ins. However, where support is lacking in the browser, best practice suggests that you should fall back to Flash plug-ins. You can either let the browser render the chrome for the element, or take control via JavaScript to create a bespoke interface.

source is a child element to audio and video. It enables you to specify multiple alternative sources for the media element. For example, Firefox doesn't support the WAV audio format, so you can specify an alternative source in Ogg Theora format.

canvas is a 2D drawing element that can be accessed using JavaScript to render graphics on the fly – for example, for games, graphs or animations.

4) Compatibility

Where the new elements aren't relying on a new DOM interface to be available to the browser, the element is available to you right now. The media elements audio and video have a new DOM interface, so only those browsers that have specifically implemented these media elements will be able to offer native audio or video.

However, this shouldn't hold you back from using these elements. If you use the video element and it's not supported in the browser, its contents will be rendered. For example, for my video element, I'll first provide an Ogg Theroa-encoded video, then QuickTime, then finally degrade down to Flash if the video element isn't supported:

However, there are a couple of browsers that do have trouble seeing the new elements natively. In particular, all versions of Internet Explorer can't see the elements by default, and as such they can't be styled without the help of a bit of JavaScript.

Firefox 2 and Camino 1 have a bug in the Gecko rendering engine that causes the DOM to render incorrectly. However, Firefox 2 had its A-grade support dropped earlier this year, and Firefox has a very solid upgrade path (hence why they've been dropped from A-grade support in the first place)

Camino has version 2 in beta, but it hasn't been released just yet (and arguably, it's not an A-grade browser). However, there are a few ways to fix Firefox 2 and Camino 1 and you can read about them here

Fixing Internet Explorer

Fixing Internet Explorer

So, Internet Explorer is problematic. What's new, right? The fix is actually incredibly simple, and if you're using any of the new DOM APIs or HTML5 JavaScript APIs, the requirement for JavaScript is justified.

Sjoerd Visscher first posted about this solution whereby Internet Explorer is able to style any element so long as you run the following code:

document.createElement('myelement');

Now myelement can be styled using CSS in Internet Explorer. We also have an HTML5 shiv to enable all the HTML5 elements for Internet Explorer. So long as this script is included in the head element, then you'll be able to style the document correctly:

If JavaScript isn't enabled, the document will be displayed as if CSS hadn't been applied to the document, which (given that we're used to writing semantic standards-based markup) means all the content is accessible and readable regardless.

Default HTML5 styles

As with any browser, all the default styles for all elements are part of the browser. Since the browsers don't really know about these new elements by default, we need to give the block elements their initial default styles. This is fixed by including the following CSS in your style sheet:

header, nav, section, article, figure, aside, footer { display: block; }

But wait: it's more than just markup. HTML5 is much, much more than just markup changes. There's also the Web Forms 2.0 spec in HTML5 which means we don't have to use JavaScript to do the basic form validation that we've all repeated time and time again.

You've also seen how the audio and video elements can be interactive. They expose a DOM interface that JavaScript can interact with. Included in the HTML5 spec is a host of JavaScript APIs, along with a bunch of JavaScript APIs that used to be in the spec and have since been moved out to their own specs. New HTML5 JavaScript APIs include:

Drag and Drop – native JavaScript dragging, which also works across browser windows. Currently available in IE8, Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4.

Inline editing – enabling the user to edit content visibly on the page without an editor; the changes can then be used as the input to a CMS.

History API – to support Ajax-based applications and saving states in the history to move back and forth between.

Cross-domain messaging – allowing messages to be communicated across different domains. This is available in IE8, Firefox 3.5, Safari 4 and Opera 10.

Offline applications – enabling users to continue to use your web application even without a web connection. Available in Safari 4 (and iPhone Safari) and Firefox 3.5.

The specs are changing all the time, leading up to the last call (in October 2009).

Some of the other interesting JavaScript APIs include:

Local storage – two types of storage, key/value pair and SQL based to store data associated with your application.

Web workers – basically threading for JavaScript.

Geolocation – an API to retrieve the latitude and longitude.

New selector API – document. querySelectorAll uses CSS syntax to find elements in the DOM.

Web sockets – for TCP/IP type socket communication.

HTML5 is here to stay. The semantic elements are ready to be used today, and a decent amount of the JavaScript APIs are available in the latest browsers to be played with and integrated into your cutting edge applications. So go play!

Mandriva Linux 2010 was recently released and brings lots of nice improvements to an already nice system. Mandriva has a long and distinguished history in the Linux distribution arena. They began over a decade ago using Red Hat as their base and quickly became the preferred choice of the new Linux user.

Although many changes have occurred to the company over the years, and ultimately theyve lost their crown, Mandriva Linux remains a solid choice in an alternative operating system.

Introduction

Mandriva is primarily a KDE distro, although they do give GNOME and others almost equal development time. This release features KDE 4.3.2 and GNOME 2.28.1 as well as several lighter choices. Linux 2.6.31.5, Xorg X Server 1.6.5, and GCC 4.4.1 form the foundation underneath. Traditionally, the outstanding features of Mandriva are its installer and system control panel – which are rivaled by few, but this release hopes to offer some amenities to appeal to users of newer trends in technology such as semantic desktop and netbook support.

The Mandriva Linux installer sets the standard in user-friendly Linux installers. They were the first to use a pretty framebuffered graphical interface but perhaps the most useful element was the partitioner. To this day it remains the easiest to use due to the manner of the visual representation of your hard disk layout. Many others have used Mandriva installer for inspiration in their designs, but Mandriva reigns supreme

The Mandriva Control Center again was ground breaking at it the time of its unveiling and again, it has few equals to this day. From within the control center a user can perform the whole range of Linux configuration. From hardware to software to kernel to boot to users, it can be found in this handy compact system tool.

The Mandriva Software Management system is capable and easy to use as well. It will install software from a aptly stocked software repository, apply package and system updates, as well as removing unwanted software. Packages are categorized by function and can be sorted by their install status, package classification, or by search results. Information such as release data, changelog, and included files can be reviewed for each package. Checking the tick box and clicking apply is all that required to install a package or set of packages.

The software manager also includes a System Tray applet to check for updates and inform the user of any available. When available the applet icon will will alert the user and upon clicking a window will open listing the updates giving the user the choice of applying them or not. At first boot the user will be asked to configure a remote update and software source, which entails just a few mouse clicks.

Mandriva Linux is available in three basic formats: an installable live CD, a free install DVD, and an all-inclusive commercial PowerPack edition. The installable live CD comes in your choice of KDE or GNOME, your choice of languages, and ships with some convenient proprietary code such as Wi-Fi drivers, 3D graphic drivers, Flash, and some browser plugins. This is the recommended version for most users.

Advanced users may wish to use the free install DVD because it provides more desktop environments, several kernels, support for various hardware architectures, and developmental tools; but lacks proprietary drivers, codecs, and Flash. The commercial version has all sorts of extra goodies and is available at Mandriva Store.

All Mandriva Linux formats come with a nice set of applications. Web browsers, email clients, office programs, multimedia players, chat and messaging clients, photo and image management and manipulation apps, games, and utilities are found in the menu. The online software repositories contain thousands more waiting to be installed. Mandriva is one of the largest and most complete Linux distributions available.

2010 Improvements

For those familiar with Mandriva this release brings some great improvements. The best two so far have been the increased stability and performance. Mandriva may have had a reputation for being a bit crashy in the past, but it appears those days are gone. In the several days since a fresh install only one application crash has occurred here, and this application is known to be unstable across distributions. This new-found stability comes with even better speed as well. Not only does Mandriva boot quicker, but desktop performance has improved noticeably. Applications open and function faster, including the two heavyweights OpenOffice.org and Firefox. There is virtually no graphic artifacting and redraws are immediate. In addition, the 2010 graphics are just beautiful.

Some new features include a Live Upgrade for current users which allows them to update to 2010 without doing a fresh install. The installer now features a handy graphical initial partition layout screen before starting the actual partitioner, and the partitioner now has a file browser that lets you look at your current partitions data before making any decisions. Most of Mandriva original tools have seen lots of improvements in usability and efficiency and Ext4 is now the default filesystem. New guest user allows you to let others use your computer without risking your data.
Conclusion

This really is a banner release for Mandriva. It been a long time since I could recommend it too much, but it moved way up my list with 2010. For new users the complete experience with Mandriva One live CD will convince you better than my words and for loyal users, well, you already know. It might be too soon to say, but it feels like this release will go down as Mandriva best ever – and perhaps it just might be the best Linux release of the year

Microsoft has been working hard to get their software tools in the hands of people who are starting out new ventures, and these efforts have been widely well-received.

For instance, the DreamSpark program has provided design and development tools to students worldwide free of charge, while the BizSpark program has provided licenses for the same set of tools to software startups for a mere token fee of $100.

Now there a new Website Spark program from Microsoft that is aimed at web professionals and small web development companies who are involved in designing websites and other web-based applications.

Eligibility Criteria for Website Spark

If you build websites for your clients and have no more than 10 people working for you (including owners and employees), you are eligible to sign up for the Website Spark program.

The only restriction is that you must launch a new website or service within 6 months of getting accepted into the program that is built using the tools that you received through WebsiteSpark.

Software Tools included in the Program

If you agree, you will be offered licenses for Visual Studio, Expression Studio, Expression Web, Windows Web Server, and SQL Server Web Edition for three years. You can purchase the licenses at the end of three years or simply exit the program.

There are no up-front costs but youll have to pay a $100 program fee once you decide to exit the program. In addition to software licenses, participating web development companies will also get discounts on hosting services for their websites, as well as coverage on the upcoming WebsiteSpark portal.

The WebsiteSpark program is available to web design companies around the world, so if you are planning on launching a company or currently run a small company that meets the requirements, WebsiteSpark might just help company save a ton of money in software licenses and you may also get some extra visibility through the various Microsoft portals.
